(AP) ? The two sides of Mary Richardson Kennedy’s grieving family faced off in court Friday, just hours before she was mourned at a wake at the estate where she committed suicide.

Details of the legal dispute were sealed by a judge, but it came as the Kennedy and Richardson families were finalizing arrangements for separate memorial services for the 52-year-old architect and environmentalist, who hanged herself Wednesday. Mary and Robert Kennedy had been going through a lengthy, contested divorce.

Relatives, friends including “Curb Your Enthusiasm” creator-star Larry David and “CBS This Morning” co-host Gayle King, and other mourners ? so many that some had to park on nearby side streets ? converged Friday evening on the brick mansion in suburban Bedford. Floral deliveries and vans full of people arrived as two police cars were stationed at end of the long driveway, keeping reporters at a distance.

“Everyone loved her. She was part of our family,” brother-in-law Douglas Kennedy said as he left the gathering. “She was the most organized, fun-loving person. … She loved for everyone to be together, which is what we’re trying to do.”

As for the seeming rift between the families, he said only that his late sister-in-law wouldn’t have wanted to see her relatives fight and added, “We’re all just trying to stay together.”

Earlier in the day, Robert Kennedy declined to speak about the legal dispute after emerging from a closed court session in White Plains, saying only, “It’s all done.” Lawyers for Mary Kennedy’s siblings also declined to comment or didn’t return phone calls.

After the legal proceedings concluded, the medical examiner’s office in Westchester County received an order instructing them to release the body to a funeral home in Bedford, according to a county spokeswoman.

Mary had been close with the Kennedy family for decades, dating back to a childhood friendship with one of Robert’s sisters, Kerry Kennedy.

One of Mary’s brothers, Thomas Richardson, filed a legal motion in White Plains on Thursday listing Robert Kennedy as the defendant. The document wasn’t made public and was then subsequently sealed, along with all other papers related to the case, by Judge Joan Lefkowitz.

The court filing came on the same day that the Kennedys had announced their memorial plans for Mary, which included the wake Friday evening, a funeral Saturday morning at a Roman Catholic Church, and burial later in the day near the family’s seaside compound in Hyannisport, Mass.

Meanwhile, Mary Kennedy’s siblings announced through their lawyer, Kerry Lawrence, that they were planning a memorial service in Manhattan, though they didn’t say when.

Lawrence declined to answer questions about the court filing Friday. The lawyer listed in court records as representing Thomas Richardson, Patricia Hennessey, had also served as Mary’s divorce lawyer. Hennessey did not return a phone message.

Mary Kennedy killed herself after struggling for years with depression and alcohol.

“She struggled so hard, for so long, with mental illness, which so many Americans suffer with,” Kerry Kennedy said in brief remarks to reporters Friday outside the church where the funeral was planned. “She fought with dignity, and in the end, the demons won.”

Mary and Robert, the son of assassinated U.S. senator and Attorney General Robert Kennedy, had been in divorce proceedings since 2010. The couple had been living in separate homes and had four children together.

“We’re trying to take care of Bobby and Mary’s kids. That’s all that anyone should be caring about,” Douglas Kennedy said.

Records in the couple’s divorce case are sealed, but the public docket sheet showed that Robert Kennedy’s lawyers had sought a contempt order in the case last summer, indicating a dispute between the two sides.

American Express also sued Mary Kennedy in April, claiming she owed $32,624 in unpaid bills. Her lawyers didn’t respond to inquiries about that lawsuit.

MOBILE MMOS, Massively Multiplayer Online Games | My Business …

  • May 20, 2012 3:52 am

Massively multiplayer online (MMO) are online games ensuring that a large number of people can play the identical game at once in what is referred to as a persistent world. Even when one player or more log off from a game, the game continues even in their absence. When users get to log on again they will find that certain aspects of the game have changed and they have to adjust accordingly.
Initially MMOs were played using personal computers, though as time has gone on it is now possible to play these games on a mobile phone. Thanks to improved mobile connectivity and the rise of the Smartphone which offer increased display capability, faster data transfer speeds and increased processing power online gaming developers now have mobile MMOs that can be played on various devices.
Today mobile users are able to enjoy different mobile massively multiplayer online games. Unlike modern devices the earlier mobile phones were limited in their capability and graphics which couldn?t allow for online games. Today the games range from very simple and straight forward games to complex games that can keep a player on their phone or tablet for quite some time.
Mobile MMOs are divided into the two groups; traditional and casual games. Casual games are mainly played for a short period of times and focus on a single game. There are some however that involve many players but are still based on simple short games. Some of these games can be downloaded with a simple application whereas others are played in the browser.
The traditional games are drawn from the PC-massively multiplayer games. They are identical copies of what one would play online on their computer. This allows players to continue playing their online games since they can log on from their mobile device. This was initially not possible with earlier mobile phones due to the limitations they had with graphics and other functionalities. Modern mobile devices such as tablets and Smartphones are able to produce similar graphics to those offered by personal computers.
Mobile gaming is on the rise and with an increase in the demand for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets it is likely that this industry is set to grow. Indeed there has been an increase in the number of game developers for mobile systems and they seem to be growing rapidly and trying to integrate with other applications such as Facebook. It is estimated that those that mobile gamers spend at least half an hour daily this in translates into profits for those developing gaming applications.
Also important to note is that those in developing countries tend to use mobile phones more frequently than they do personal computers. Most of them have fairly big populations, and as a result the trend of MMOs is likely to grow in these regions giving a boost to the mobile gaming industry. It is likely that in coming years the mobile phone gamers with exceeding those that traditionally play online games on their PCs.

Estrella Carrera Case: Arnoldo Jimenez Wanted For Murder

  • May 19, 2012 2:37 am

A manhunt is underway nationally for fugitive Arnoldo Jimenez, the man charged with the murder of his bride, Estrella Carrera, in Chicago, Ill.

The FBI issued a federal warrant for Arnoldo Jimenez, the Chicago Tribune reports.

“The warrant was issued on the fact that Jimenez will or has fled the boundaries of the State of Illinois,” Burbank police said in a news release.

Carrera was stabbed to death in her bathtub last weekend, still wearing her wedding dress. Jimenez has been charged with first-degree murder.

Carrera

The federal warrant reveals more clues about what happened to Carrera.

“On May 13, 2012, Jimenez spoke with his sister by telephone, telling her he and Carrera had a bad fight and he left her bleeding,” according to the warrant.

A “close associate” of Jimenez also told authorities that Jimenez said “he was leaving the state of Illinois and if questioned by law enforcement, the associate should tell law enforcement he went to Mexico.”

Burbank Police Capt. Joe Ford told the Tribune that authorities have received more than 300 tips regarding the case, most of which have been car sightings.

Arnoldo Jimenez was last seen driving a black Maserati sedan.

Jimenez is the father of Carrera’s 2-year-old son. Estrella Carrera, the slain bride, also had a 9-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

The AP reported earlier this week that authorities encouraged Jiminez to “turn himself in for the sake of his family and especially his children.”

Study uncovers a new exception to a decades-old rule about RNA splicing

  • May 19, 2012 12:34 am

Friday, May 18, 2012

There are always exceptions to a rule, even one that has prevailed for more than three decades, as demonstrated by a Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) study on RNA splicing, a cellular editing process. The rule-flaunting exception uncovered by the study concerns the way in which a newly produced RNA molecule is cut and pasted at precise locations called splice sites before being translated into protein.

“The discovery of this exception could impact current ideas on how missteps in splicing triggered by mutations in the DNA sequence can lead to diseases such as cancer and various genetic disorders,” says CSHL Professor Adrian Krainer, Ph.D., who led the research. The study appears in the May 15 issue of Genes & Development.

For a protein to be synthesized by the cell, the instructions encoded within that protein’s gene have to be first copied from DNA into RNA. This initial copy, called a pre-messenger RNA, is then edited much like film footage, where the unnecessary bits?strings of nucleotides called introns?are snipped out and the remaining bits (called exons) are spliced together. For the cut-and-paste mechanism to work correctly, the cell’s splicing machinery initially has to be guided to the correct splice site at the beginning of each intron on the target pre-mRNA by another, smaller RNA called U1.

U1 finds the right spots, or splice sites, by lining up against the target RNA and pairing its own RNA nucleotides or bases (the “letters” of the RNA code, A, U, C, G) with those of the target RNA such that its A nucleotide pairs with the target’s U, and its C nucleotide pairs with the target’s G nucleotide, or vice-versa. U1′s ability to recognize splice sites at the beginning of introns is the strongest when up to 11 bases are paired up with their partners on the target RNA, but in most cases, fewer base pairs are formed

Two years ago, Krainer and postdoctoral researcher Xavier Roca discovered, however, that the U1 RNA could recognize even seemingly imperfect splice sites that did not appear to have the correct matching RNA sequence. Instead of lining up against the first RNA base of the target intron’s RNA sequence, U1 can sometimes slide down the sequence to the next base if this shift will allow more of the U1 bases to pair up with the target’s bases and thereby produce a stronger match.

Krainer and Roca have now found a second, and much more prevalent, alternative option. Instead of shifting away from the first base, they show using a combination of experimental and computational approaches that one or more bases on either U1 or its target can “bulge out”?or pull away from the lineup?if this allows the surrounding nucleotides to produce a stronger match between U1 and the target.

Based on studying splice sites in about 6,500 human genes, they estimate that up to 5% of all splice sites, present in 40% of human genes use this “bulge” mechanism to be recognized. Interestingly, some of these atypically recognized sites occur within genes which when mutated lead to disease, and others are sites where alternative splicing?allowing a single pre-mRNA to give rise to different proteins?can occur.

“This study expands what we thought were the rules for splice site recognition by U1,” said Michael Bender, Ph.D., who oversees RNA processing grants at the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), which partially supported the study. “By extending our understanding of how the splicing process works, the findings may help us pinpoint the splicing defects that underlie certain diseases and develop new therapeutics to treat them.”

HBT: Lawrie’s punishment is ridiculous

  • May 18, 2012 7:42 am

No matter the circumstances, no major league umpire should ever feel unsafe on the field. MLB simply didn?t do enough to protect its men in blue Wednesday by handing Brett Lawrie a mere four-game suspension for his outburst in Tuesday?s game.

Lawrie?s helmet spike was no mere accident. I?m certainly not going to argue that he intended to injure home-plate umpire Bill Miller, but he could have. He knew exactly where Miller was when he spiked the helmet in that direction. Furthermore, he remained aggressive afterwards, and Miller may well have spent a couple of split-seconds wondering if he was going to get punched.

There?s an awful lot to like about Lawrie?s play on the field, but the 22-year-old has plenty of growing up to do. That he was so completely out of control last night should have earned him a 10-game suspension from the league. The lesser penalty is a slap in the face to those making the calls on the field.

Oil falls on euro zone, WTI at six-month low

By Jessica Donati

LONDON (Reuters) – Oil prices slid with world shares and the euro on Wednesday as investors fled from riskier assets due to the Greek crisis, while a surprise build in U.S. crude inventories helped send the WTI benchmark to a more than six-month low.

“One element contributing to the decline in oil prices is general investor risk aversion stemming from euro zone concerns and an increased risk of a general economic slowdown,” said Gareth Lewis-Davies, a senior energy strategist at BNP Paribas.

It has also helped send the euro to a four-month low against the dollar, another factor weighing on oil prices on Wednesday.

Brent crude was down 73 cents at $111.51 a barrel at 06.31 a.m. EDT. U.S. oil was down $1.17 to $92.81 a barrel, up from an earlier low of $91.81 a barrel, the lowest since November 3.

U.S. STOCKS BUILD

An unexpected build in U.S. crude oil stocks added to an already ample supply outlook. Inventories rose nearly four times more than expected, data from the American Petroleum Institute (API) showed on Tuesday.

Weekly data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)is due at 10.30 a.m. EDT. <EIA/S>

Analysts have been sharply divided about whether the reversal of the Seaway pipeline from Cushing in the midcontinent to Gulf Coast would cure a glut of crude which has built up in the central United States.

So far, prospect of the reversal to take effect this week has not brought the U.S. benchmark in line with Brent.

Decreasing tension between the West and Iran also eased pressure on oil prices. Talks between Iran and the nuclear watchdog ended on Tuesday with an agreement to meet again next week, when Iran also is due to resume talks with world powers over its disputed nuclear program.

The impact of a ban on Iranian oil could also be reduced if the EU postpones a ban on insurance for cargoes of Iranian oil. Britain confirmed EU countries were discussing whether the insurance ban should be delayed beyond July 1.

On the supply side, Saudi Arabia is pumping oil at the highest rate for 30 years and advocating a drop in oil prices.

But some analysts still expect demand to grow more swiftly than supply in the second half of the year as the U.S. driving season sets in and Saudi Arabia’s limited spare capacity add to pressure on the market.

“A further $2-$3 fall is acceptable under current conditions,” said Tetsu Emori, a Tokyo-based commodities fund manager at Astmax Investments.

“The market has been under pressure because of weak sentiment. But if you go by supply-demand balance, oil prices are undervalued.”

Brent remains neutral above support at $110.34 per barrel, the May 7 low, while support for U.S. oil lies at $92.79 per barrel, according to Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao. <TECH/C>

Mayan calendar discovery suggests world might not end in 2012 (+video)

  • May 18, 2012 1:25 am

A new discovery indicates that Mayan astronomers believed that the universe would continue past 2012.?

By Malcolm Ritter,?Associated Press / May 11, 2012

Three male figures, seated and painted in black are pictured in this undated handout of an artist’s rendition of a Mayan painting obtained. Archaeologists discovered a scribe’s notes about the Maya lunar calendar, which they say could be the first known records by an official chronicler of this ancient civilization.

Archaeologists have found a small room in?Mayan?ruins where royal scribes apparently used walls like a blackboard to keep track of astronomical records and the society’s intricate calendar some 1,200 years ago.

The walls reveal the oldest known astronomical tables from the Maya. Scientists already knew they must have been keeping such records at that time, but until now the oldest known examples dated from about 600 years later.

Astronomical records were key to the?Mayan?calendar, which has gotten some attention recently because of doomsday warnings that it predicts the end of the world this December. Experts say it makes no such prediction. The new finding provides a bit of backup: The calculations include a time span longer than 6,000 years that could extend well beyond 2012.

“Why would they go into those numbers if the world is going to come to an end this year?” observed Anthony Aveni of Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y., an expert on?Mayan?astronomy. “You could say a number that big at least suggests that time marches on.”

Aveni, along with William Saturno of Boston University and others, report the discovery in Friday’s issue of the journal Science.

The room, a bit bigger than 6-feet square, is part of a large complex of?Mayan?ruins in the rain forest at Xultun in northeastern Guatemala. The walls also contain portraits of a seated king and some other figures, but it’s clear those have no connection to the astronomical writings, the scientists said.

One wall contains a calendar based on phases of the moon, covering about 13 years. The researchers said they think it might have been used to keep track of which deity was overseeing the moon at particular times.

Aveni said it would allow scribes to predict the appearance of a full moon years in advance, for example. Such record-keeping was key to?Mayan?astrology and rituals, and maybe would be used to advise the king on when to go to war or how good this year’s crops would be, he said.

“‘What you have here is astronomy driven by religion,” he said.

On an adjacent wall are numbers indicating four time spans from roughly 935 to 6,700 years. It’s not clear what they represent, but maybe the scribes were doing calculations that combined observations from important astronomical events like the movements of Mars, Venus and the moon, the researchers said.

Why bother to do that? Maybe the scribes were “geeks … who just got carried away with doing these kinds of computations and calculations, and probably did them far beyond the needs of ordinary society,” Aveni suggested.

Experts unconnected with the discovery said it was a significant advance.

“It’s really a wonderful surprise,” said Simon Martin, co-curator of an exhibit about the?Mayan?calendar at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

While the results of the scribes’ work were known from carvings on monuments, “we’ve never really been able to identify a working space, or how they actually went about things,” Martin said.

The new work gives insight into that, he said, and the fact the room had a stone roof rather than thatching supports previous indications that the scribes enjoyed a high social standing.

“It’s a very important discovery. We’re only getting a glimpse of it” in the published paper, said John B. Carlson, director of the Center for Archaeoastronomy in College Park, Md.

“This is an intriguing start for this discovery.”
